Everyone loves to say they have skied the biggest and the
best ski resorts in
the US and Canada. But what determines the best ski areas? Is it ski acreage,
annual snow accumulation or just vertical drop? We know Vertical is a big feat
for many skiers and riders. So here is our list of the US and Canadian ski
resorts with the most vertical drop for skiers. While vertical stats
alone do not make a ski mountain, we have personally reviewed most of these
sizeable ski resorts and they are worth a ski trip visit! Size does matter!
Who has the most vertical skiing in the US and Canada?
Revelstoke Ski Resort in British Columbia has
the biggest vertical skiing in North America.
Revelstoke has 5,620' vertical, and over 3,100 acres of skiing.
Whistler-Blackcomb Ski Resort in British Columbia Canada
Whistler is the largest ski resort in North America, also hosting the most skier
visits at its two interconnected ski mountains Whistler and Blackcomb.
Whistler's vertical is 4,978' and Blackcomb's is 5,133'
and over 8,100 acres of skiing and riding.
4396 - Snowmass Ski Resort, Aspen, Colorado
Of Aspen's four separate ski mountains, Snowmass is the largest with the
most vertical in Colorado.
Snowmass' vertical is 4,396 but only when the summit platter is running (a
rare event). There is 3,500 acres of skiing.
Aspen Highlands has
3,635' of vertical (4,292 with hike) and 1,500 acres.
Ajax or Aspen Mountain's vertical is 3,267'
with 750 acres, located in downtown Aspen, part of Aspen Skiing Company's 4
4350 - Big Sky
Ski Resorts, Montana
Moonlight Basin & Big Sky are now joined to become the biggest skiing in the US,
and the second largest continuous ski area in North America. Big Sky's vertical drop is 4,350'
with 5,500 acres of skiing combined.
Jackson Hole Ski Resort, Wyoming
Located in the Grand Tetons, Jackson Hole has the greatest vertical drop in the
US. The Tram serves the full 4,105' for long laps.
Panorama Ski Resort, British Columbia
Panorama has 3,979' of vertical and 3,000 acres of skiing, and a beautiful on
mountain Intrawest ski village at the base.
3881 - Kicking Horse Ski Resort, British Columbia
Kicking Horse's vertical is 4,133' with 3,000 acres of skiing and riding. The
terrain is steep and super scenic served by a swift gondola - kick ass in simple
terms. The 3,790 gondola is the 2nd longest vertical lift in North America.
Telluride Ski Resort in Colorado
Telluride's vertical is 3,845 lift serviced and 4,425' if you hike to the 13,320' summit, with 2,000+ acres of
skiing. The scenery is big too!
3690 - Timberline on Mt Hood is the only resort in North America open for year-round
skiing with glacier skiing in summer.

3514 - Sunshine Village in Banff
Canada has an 8,954' summit, and 3,514 vertical, with 3,300 acres. Did we

3365 - Mt Bachelor Oregon
The largest ski resort in the Pacific North West, Mt Bachelor is a 9,065'
dormant volcano you can ski, all 360-degrees in fact. Bachelor's vertical is
3,365' with 3,683 acres of terrain served by fast lifts.
Beaver Creek Ski Resort, Colorado
Beaver Creek has 3,360' of vertical, part of Vail Resorts, located just a few miles
from Vail Mountain. Actually 4,040 of vertical but you can only ski 3,360 in one
3065 - The Canyons in Utah, now part of
Park City is Utah largest ski resort with a 3,065' vertical.
3041 - Vail Ski Resort, Colorado
Vail is the largest single ski resort in the US by acreage, smaller than
Whistler/Blackcomb in Canada, and Big Sky in Montana.
Vail's vertical is really 3,450 but you can only ski 3,041'. Vail has over 5,500 acres.
3000 Deer Valley, Utah- Snowboarders are
not allowed at Deer Valley but smart skiers now this exclusive ski area can
deliver powder, posh service, gorgeous grooming and pretty long runs too with a
2900 Snowbasin Utah - With three gondolas and an
Olympic Downhill, Snowbasin has serious vertical. Three of the five longest
vertical lifts in Utah are at this special ski resort, beyond Park City - which
makes it quieter, still big and beautiful.
North East Ski Resorts with the most vertical feet of skiing:
Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort, New York has the highest vertical drop in the
East at 3,216' with 750 acres of skiing.
Killington has 3,050’
vertical and a summit of 4,241' with
785 acres, hence the name Beast of the East.
Sugarloaf has 2,820' vertical and over 1,000 acres of skiing.
The Loaf offers some super long runs when the summit snowfields are open and the
wind isn't howling.
2564 - Smugglers' Notch Vermont
Smuggs has a vertical of 2,564' from the summit of Madonna. This family friendly
ski resort has some serious steeps, served by double chairs which creates
excellent downhill capacity!
2552 - Sugarbush Vermont
Sugarbush in Vermont offers two ski mountains connected Lincoln Peak and Ellen.
Mt Ellen has the bigger vertical at 2,552'.
2360 - Stowe Vermont has a vertical of 2,360’ with a
summit of 4,395' with 485
