highest base of any ski resort in New England, with a vertical drop of over
2,000' and 66 trails and glades amid 220 acres. Saddleback s blessed with natural snow, and fortified with manmade snow
that the Berry family invested in along with two new lifts, a base lodge and
condos (they've spent over $40 million since they
bought the resort in 2003).
Skiing Saddleback is like a flash back in time, methodic low speed lifts bring
skiers up to the highly scenic, high elevation summit where you find beautiful
snowy trails lined with snow ghosts - all to yourself - not another skier
insight. Well groomed runs with a bunch of new edgy glades like Casablanca
entertain you throughout the day, a relaxed pace and happy friendly skiers is
the theme here. For lunch, we suggest a window table in Saddleback's post
and beam lodge upstairs at the Swig and Smelt Pub with a beautiful view of the
While we like the convenience of staying slopeside in a Saddleback condominium,
on a recent ski trip to Saddleback, we found a most serene setting for skiers on the shores of Rangeley
Lake in Maine near Saddleback Mountain skiing. Rangeley is one of
New England's best ski towns. The Loon Lodge provides more than
just a comfortable night’s lodging in rustic Maine ambiance.
From the moment we arrive at the 1909 log cabin, time slows and relaxation sets
in. There is a crackling fire in the lodge living room, with Bucky the deer
keeping watch from above the mantle. Our guest room offers classic pine walls, a
quilted king sleigh bed, antique furnishings, a mini-fridge and spacious tiled
bathroom, but the best part - the picture windows framing the snowy grounds down
to the ice-covered Lake and mountains beyond. We highly recommend Suite 1 for
honeymooners or a ski couple, while the T-bar Christie Suite is perfect for
families. Other guest rooms have shared baths, at reduced rates.
Once at The Loon Lodge, we found no need to venture into the town of Rangeley.
After checking emails on the wifi in our lovely room, we settled into cocktails
in Pickford Pub, a lively bar with a view of the Lake and a woodstove. Watching
the sunset over Rangeley Lake from the Pub or your suite, as snowmobilers zip
across the frozen expanse in the last light of day, is the perfect end to a day
skiing on the nearby slopes of Saddleback. Skiing is just seven miles away from
the Lodge, but you may encounter as many snowmobilers as skiers at Loon Lodge
because of the direct access to lake riding.
After the sun’s final rays fade on the Lake, we make our way into the Lakeview
dining room to yet another fire, and candlelight tables. The Chef’s menu is
extensive for a nine-room establishment, but the locals enjoy the culinary
offerings here too, especially themed wine dinners. Despite being in the Maine
lakes and mountains, we enjoyed coastal concoctions of calamari and Ahi tuna as
appetizers for the main course specialty of stuffed Haddock. Dinner was
perfectly prepared, and for entertainment, we watched the last sled return to
the lodge, their headlights flickering as they approached and parked outside –
they looked eager to be returning to the warm inviting lodge.
In the morning, we were restored and ready to hit the slopes of Saddleback.
While we gave up slope side convenience, being lakeside is such a treat, with a
ten minute commute up to Saddleback’s high-elevation snowy slopes, where we
parked a snowball’s toss from our car. Loon Lodge is perfect for a winter
retreat, an old world lake cabin with top cuisine and very friendly hospitality
in the heart of Maine’s Lake Region. Also see a complete
