While Moonlight was its own ski area for ten years,
it is now simply the Northern Exposure of Big Sky, since Big Sky purchased it in
2013. Now that Big Sky owns Moonlight Basin, its some of of the
largest ski acreage in the US.
originally opened in 2003 with 8 lifts including a 6-person chairlift
accessing 2,200 acres of skiing. The resort features The Moonlight Lodge, a
fabulous log lodge and spa with cascading outdoor pool, and magnificent mountain
homes throughout beautiful Montana mountain resort.
Moonlight was started by two ranch hands, who knew a thing or two about building
luxury ski lodges and homes. Skiing at Moonlight feels like a private club, akin
to nearby Yellowstone Club – without the steep membership dues.
In 2013 Big Sky and
Yellowstone Club's owner - CrossHarbor Capital, purchased
Moonlight Basin, making Big Sky some
of the biggest skiing in
America with over 5,750 acres
and 34 lifts, including the previously private ski terrain and lifts of Spanish Peaks. No
word yet on access to the tony Yellowstone Club, that will likely remain
posh and private. But whether you stay at Big Sky or Moonlight Basin, you have
vast skiing at both, sharing the same impressive 11,166' Lone Peak.
Families can rent beautiful ski in ski out homes at Moonlight, and ski all of
Big Sky's vast 5,800 acres of terrain from wide open cruisers to scenic glades
and high alpine bowls.
Lone Peak serves as a dramatic focal point during your ski day, rising 11,166’
like the Matterhorn in Zermatt Switzerland. Now that Big Sky and Moonlight Basin
are merged, and on the same ski ticket, you don't have to
choose, you can access all three sides of majestic Lone Peak, all 5,800 acres. That’s greater than
Alta, Snowbird, Vail, and
approaching Whistler Blackcomb in Canada.
After skiing Big Sky and Moonlight Basin’s vast acreage of north facing protected snow, and
challenging yourself on the backside of Lone Peak, the Moonlight Spa awaits. The
décor of Moonlight Lodge is rocky mountain elegant, with big horn sheep perched
on the huge stone fireplace, comfy leather couches and Montana artwork. Happy
Hour and dinner of Elk and Caribou at Moonlight Lodge's Tavern with a view of the slopes is the
ultimate après ski reward, and some of
the best dining at Big Sky Resort. We recommend you make a ski trip to Big
