We can’t tell you the exact location of the San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge –
White Deer - sworn to sweet secrecy - but we
can tell you it’s the most amazing private posh ski lodge in the
Italian Alps. If you are looking for the
ultimate mountain hideaway, a private remote chalet with a gracious staff
providing exclusive discreet service for you and you alone, the San Lorenzo
Mountain Lodge is for you. Perched high on a mountainside, this luxurious and
historic lodge overlooks the spectacular Dolomite Mountains and sweeping
Pusteria Valley below. Arrive by helicopter, there’s a heli pad, or proprietor
Stefano Barbini will meet you by the old Church in town and escort you up the
narrow, winding road that warrants double black diamond status to his secluded
enclave that is intentionally not on GPS or maps. Once you are here, you are off
the grid, upscale and unencumbered. Your lodging is a gorgeous 16th century
hunting lodge designed for the Bishop and Prince. Now its yours.
Staying at San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge is for the elite, since the $2,900 a night
is for the entire chalet of 4 bedrooms, living rooms, spa and outdoor Jacuzzi,
even a golf putting green. No neighbors, no paparazzi, just peace and
San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge is the creation of Giorgia and Stefano Barbini –
called White Deer- executives escaped from the Italian fashion world of Milan to the mountains. They renovated and opened the
exclusive lodge in 2011 – and it exudes their style and passion while preserving
every historic detail of the four-hundred-year old building. The woodwork is
amazing, yet the modern amenities of tile showers and fixtures, fur pillows and
bed covers are perfectly tasteful.
After Stefano led us up the wild, winding narrow road, not for timid drivers, to his
17 hectare (42 acre) private enclave, we parked our car on the heli-pad, since
we were the only guests expected. He proudly toured us through his mountainside retreat.
Passing through the oldest wood doors ever, the first floor of the lodge
revealed a grand foyer leading to a Tyrolean Stube where bounteous breakfast,
snacks and dinner are served, and a cozy living room, plus a more modern media
room with TV. We were shown the cucina (kitchen) which is open to guests, but is fully
staffed with a personal Chef and a server. An expansive upstairs includes a
fireplace living room, and a Relaxing Room with Turkish steam bath, huge spa
tub, sauna, and chaises with a view. Three master suites - the Bishops, Dream and
Nest rooms, plus a cozy bunk room called Rifugio, would comfortably accommodate
three couples or two families ideally. Outside is a glorious Jacuzzi offering the best
views, with a heated rack for your towels and robe, plus a firepit with couches.
There is also a high elevation putting green, a sight to see, with six tees
lofted above the three pins on the huge rolling green – making 18 holes of Vertical
Golf at 1,500-meters says Stefano.
After freshening up in our beautiful wood-adorned suite with the most modern
baths carefully tucked into the centuries old building, we met Stefano for
aperitif. Stefano took us to the lower level of the chateau to his rustic wine
cave, formerly the goat stable, for bubbly – a wonderful sparkling Italian Rosé.
Then he let us drive his Ferrari, a stunning red Berkel meat slicer – we sliced
and savored the best speck (smoked ham) and braciole yet in Italy – freshly hand carved
Stefano’s carefully selected wine collection, Italian Cabernet to Chardonnay, featured
robust color and minerality he attributed to the glacial and volcanic soil of
the Alto Adige region, explaining that local farmers have won international
awards, but not huge acclaim due to their small production. Stefano keeps an
impressive 1,500 bottle stash for his fortunate guests.
Dinner at San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge is as elegant and delicious as it is
exclusive. Duck salad with asparagus, the best parmesan risotto ever, tenderloin
with spätzle, followed by a melting chocolate cake and cappuccino. Later we
adjourned to the Bishops sitting room for Grappa and Lemoncello on sumptuous leather and
fur couches, as Stefano shared fascinating insight to his elite lodge clientele,
not revealing any names of course. Privacy is his utmost priority. People come
here to escape the paparazzi and to truly relax. He will arrange a private ski
instructor at nearby Kronplatz ski area, part of the
Dolomiti Super Ski Region, a hike or a wine
“Luxury is simplicity, the best things in life are not complicated. You need
authenticity and true culture,” said Stefano who worked for Escada, the major
fashion house for 25 years before leaving to create his luxurious retreat. His
wife Giorgia often cooks, while he selects the best wines for their privileged
guests. It’s an unparalleled alpine
mountain retreat of exclusivity and elegance – but casual and comfy since you
have the whole house to yourselves. The Barbini family and staff live next door
in their own chalet, a phone call away.
Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn could stay here unbeknownst to anyone, no press, no
drive by stalkers, at this secluded high elevation enclave. She could
ski the nearby Dolomites, he could golf the
private putting green – which Stefano calls very challenging Vertical Golf.
If you are looking for the most exquisite and exclusive lodging experience, near
Dolomite skiing at Kronplatz but far from everything ordinary, the San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge is for you.
Stefano also offers BlueDeer - a nautical adventure of luxury on the San Lorenzo
Sea Lodge 74' catamaran that sails the Italian Mediterranean and Riviera -
Capri, Corsica, Sardinia in summer and the Caribbean Virgin Islands in winter. See our
reviews of the Dolomite Super Ski Region.
