Hotel Ciasa Salares in San Cassiano by the slopes of Alta Badia, in the Dolomite
ski region of Italy, is a charming chalet style hotel. It feels like an Austrian
mountain lodge for its alpine elegant décor, but with the more polished touches
of four star Italian hospitality.
The Weiser family is now fourth generation hoteliers here, since 1936. Stefano
Weiser is the manager at Ciasa Salares, but his mother still arrives at
breakfast with fresh baked bread, and his son assists with the Wine Cave
downstairs. The hotel is fittingly kid and pet friendly given their family roots
The Ciasa Salares rooms are modern alpine chic, rich with native wood and stone,
classic down duvets, plus spa like bathrooms with Jacuzzi, shower, bidet and
towel warmers. The Hotel has a beautiful outdoor terrace for après ski drinks in
the sun looking up at the slopes of Alta Badia – part of the
Dolomite Super Ski Region’s 12 ski areas. You
can actually ski back to Ciasa Salares on a trail that ends a short walk across
the street, or ask for a Hotel shuttle from the gondola at Piz Solera just 5
minutes away. A ski room with boot dryers downstairs is perfect for keeping you
Mornings here start with a bountiful breakfast buffet, plus a la carte eggs and
handmade coffee to order. Delicious fruits, nuts, honey, homemade jams and
grains, fresh breads and croissants with local cheeses, meats and salmon are
spread out lavishly for your pre-ski meal. There’s eve fresh squeezed orange
juice and Prosecco.
Returning from a day on the slopes, Ciasa Salares has several beautiful living
rooms with beautiful woodwork, a fireplace, couches, games and books. You can
enjoy coffee, tea, or a cocktail on the sunny terrace deck or at the Wine Bar.
The Spa downstairs offers a big infinity edge pool with a view of the mountains,
and a private adult nude spa with Jacuzzi, Sauna, Turkish bath, infrared room
and relaxation area.
We loved having four dining options right at the Ciasa Salares, no need to drive
or take a taxi for these unique dining experience. Our first night was
extraordinary at La Siriola – a Michelin 1 Star. Chef Matteo’s menu thoughtfully
reflects the Dolomite native woods, herbs, berries and roots. I chose the Birch
menu – a deliciously themed selection of cuisine with wine. The service was as
prompt as the 30 lifts we skied that day. The tastes were as extraordinary as
the views from Marmolada - unforgettable and uplifting. Prior to dessert, we
were escorted to the Chocolate Room, a chocoholic’s fantasy suite filled with
every chocolate imaginable and a chocolate fountain. This was just a pre-desert
treat, before Sancerre wine and another dessert served at our romantic table.
Our second night we enjoyed a Wine Tasting in Ciasa Salares’ Wine Cellar, where
Stefano poured six local Italian wines, paired with ideal cheese and meats in
the candlelight, cool cave stocked with 16,000 bottles of the best vintages.
After our wine and cheese tastes, we savored fondue in the Wine Cellar – a
choice of cheese fondue or fondue Chinois of veal, chicken and beef in broth.
Hotel Ciasa Salares’ Main Dining room, Ristorante Salares serves full breakfast
and 4-course dinner to guests on half-board, which means both are included in
your room rate. Ciasa Salares also has a more casual Wine Bar where we dined our
last night, with an a la carte menu of everything from light bites, burgers and
pasta, to entrees, all with a view of the groomers lights on the slopes of Alta
Badia. There’s even a “Smorting Room” – for smoking and flirting – sounded fun
but I passed having had enough flattery from the Italians on the ski slopes, and
not being a smoker.
Skiing the Dolomites, San Cassiano is ideal lodging near the ski slopes. We
loved the coziness, accommodating family staff and delicious cuisine of the
Hotel Ciasa Salares. You have easy skiing access to most of the Dolomite Super Ski
Region and the ski lifts of Alta Badia, Arabba, Marmolada and Val Di Fassa,
Belvedere, and the Sellaronde tour.
